Dear Jacqueline,

You know how we love to compare our favorite shows with each other? I love it when you tell me about a show that you’ve seen or read (by the way, I ended up reading Noises Off like you told me to, and you were right, I loved it!); I think I have one for you. It’s not as funny or happy as the ones that you shared with me, but I think you’ll appreciate it. It’s called Fires in the Mirror, and it’s actually based on real interviews done on people in Crown Heights, New York in the 90s by a woman named Anna Deavere Smith. All these people in the neighborhood talk about their reactions and opinions on a little black boy getting run over by a Jewish rabbi; it caused a lot of conflict and anger between the blacks and the Jews. It really moved me, especially toward the end (there’s a scene where the boy’s father is interviewed and—well, I let you read/see it for yourself). Hearing all those people’s stories made me think about how I would feel getting interviewed about something like that; I don’t even know where I’d start. Of course, I’d probably tell her how I felt: I really was upset about how the boy got killed and how the case was being handled. But I think I’d also tell her that I don’t think that violence and fighting would help anything. What would be most important was getting justice for the little boy and his family. If there’s ever a chance to see it done, we should definitely go together! In the meantime, I really think you should read it; it seems like something you’d appreciate.

Anyway, I miss you so much! Talk to you soon J

Love,

Paris
